Dmitri Matheny Group - West Coast Cool: A Tribute to Chet Baker
Tim Noah Thumbnail Theater is proud to present the Dmitri Matheny Group. Dmitri has been nominated for NW Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year in the 2016 Golden Ear Awards by Earshot Jazz! The Dmitri Matheny Group features Matheny on flugelhorn with Bill Anschell (piano), Phil Sparks (bass) and Mark Ivester (drums).

Acclaimed for his warm tone, soaring lyricism and masterful technique, American musician Dmitri Matheny has been lauded as one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation (International Review of Music). An honors graduate of Berklee College of Music, Dmitri Matheny vaulted onto the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protégé of jazz legend Art Farmer. Since then he has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal international following, appearing on over 100 recordings, releasing eleven CDs and touring extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Matheny one of the jazz worlds most talented horn players.

"Dmitri Matheny is a jazz treasure. The lyrical Matheny has impressive chops, but its his warmth and soulfulness that win you over"   -  All Music Guide

This performance is West Coast Cool: A Tribute To Chet Baker. Chet Baker has become an icon of American jazz. Famous for playing both trumpet and flugelhorn, Baker earned much attention and critical praise through the 1950s, particularly for albums featuring his vocals such as Chet Baker Sings and It Could Happen to You. Jazz historian Dave Gelly described the promise of Bakers early career as James Dean, Sinatra, and Bix, rolled into one. His well-publicized drug habit also drove his notoriety and fame, but such setbacks did not stop Baker from enjoying a career resurgence in the late 1970s and 80s. Along the way, Baker played and recorded with jazz heavyweights such as Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Charlie Parker, and Art Pepper.
