Tab Hunter: Confidential
In the 1950s, Tab Hunter shot to movie stardom with his matinee good looks, paired with some of the most beautiful leading ladies of the time, and who carried a secret that would have cost him dearly if it was revealed.
It is a real tell all, worthy of the best Hollywood can dream up. The Plaza Playhouse Theater will screen the 2015 documentary, Tab Hunter Confidential, on Sunday, March 12th at 2pm, with a Q&A to follow with Hunter.
Based on his 2005 book of the same name, this insiders story of the Hollywood star making machine also highlights the fear of being publicly outed as gay; a career killing revelation for any actor at the time.
Tab Hunter Confidential not only gives us a look at the real personality behind the screen star (more comfortable riding horses than standing before a camera), but who would also be instrumental in bringing down one of the biggest gossip magazines of its day.
It was a time when teenagers were seeking their own kind of movies that reflected their lives and the era of rock of n roll was coming on strong. Teen idols on records, on screen or both - would soon be the rage and Hunter was swept up in the tidal wave of a publicity machine that never stopped some good, some bad.
He even put his voice to a number one song in 1957, Young Love, but the singing career was cut short when his studio, Warner Brothers, forced him to stop because they didnt want him recording for another company. In 1958, Hunter was cast in Damn Yankees, a film that would turn out to be one of the defining moments in his career.
It was a wild ride for Hunter and, in lending his own voice to the narration of the documentary, takes us through the ups and downs of a life inside Tinsel Town and eventually to a more serene and satisfying one away from all the hype.
Following the screening of Confidential, Hunter, and his longtime partner, Allan Glaser, who also produced the documentary, will take the stage for a Q&A with moderator Peter Bie.
Seating is limited. Tickets are $20 general admission and available online and (if not sold out) at the theater box office one hour prior to show time.
