Deep Creek Preserve walking tour with Jack Nisbet
The 150-acre Deep Creek Preserve is in Reardan, Washington and adjoins the 277-acre Reardan-Audubon Lake Wildlife Area. It features vernal pools, the headwaters to three streams, and is a prime stopover for migratory birds. Inland Northwest Land Conservancy bought the land in January 2015 as a haven for wildlife. Over 200 species of birds and other creatures call the land home for at least part of the year. In the early summer the preserve abounds with nesting waterfowl and songbirds as well as a spectacular array of shrub-steppe wildflowers.
This field trip with Spokane based writer and naturalist Jack Nisbet will start at the Bisson Road entrance to the preserve and wander through a maze of pothole lakes and patterned mima mounds left behind by the Lake Missoula Floods. Scabland basalt and wet seeps around aspen groves will require good walking or hiking boots, but the reward will be Columbia Basin plant species at the far eastern edge of their range, plenty of birdsong, and geologic features worthy of a much longer excursion.
