Lisa Geduldig and El Rio Present... Comedy Returns to El Rio!
Comedy Returns to El Rio! is a popular monthly comedy show (every 3rd Thursday of the month) co-produced by Kung Pao Kosher Comedy's Lisa Geduldig and El Rio. The show, soon to celebrate its 9th year, takes place at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District and showcases an eclectic, multicultural mix of intelligent, progressive comedians from the Bay Area and beyond.
This month's event takes place on Thursday, February 16 with comedians: Diane Amos, Will Durst, Yayne Abeba, Steve Lee, and Lisa Geduldig.
Diane Amos is a San Francisco-based actress, improv artist, and comedian who is known as The Pine Sol Lady for having starred in their national commercials for over 20 years. She has appeared in numerous films including Nine Months, Copycat, Angels in the Outfield, EDTV, and Twisted and Woody Allens Blue Jasmine. Diane was a semi-finalist in Star Search, has been on A& E's Evening at The Improv, Lifetime's Girls' Night Out, and Comedy Central's Women Aloud. She has also been a winner on the game shows: Wheel of Fortune, $25,000 Pyramid, and Super Password. Diane was raised in San Francisco by two lesbian mothers and attended Washington High School in the Richmond District, where took an improvisational comedy class and the rest is history. Diane was featured earlier this month on OPRAH: Where are They Now? www.wherearetheynow.buzz/the-pine-sol-lady-opens-up-about-being-a-struggling-single-mom and recently received a shout out from Stephen Colbert www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZr94sKU19M
Will Durst has been called by The New York Times, "quite possibly the best political comedian working in the country today." He is a 5-time Emmy nominee, has been fired by PBS three times, told jokes in 14 countries, racked up 7 nominations for Stand Up of the Year, and his 800+ TV appearances include Letterman, HBO, Showtime, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News, the BBC and many more. The critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run of his one-man show, The All American Sport of Bipartisan Bashing, The All American Sport of Bi-Partisan Bashing was subsequently turned into a book of the same name by Ulysses Press. His hobbies include pinball, the never-ending quest for the perfect cheeseburger, and his heroes remain the same as when he was 12: Thomas Jefferson and Bugs Bunny. Not necessarily in that order. Durst's performances are made possible by the 1st Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. www.WillDurst.com
Yayne Abeba is a San Francisco native, comedian, and activist. Her comedy makes you sit up straight in your chair and listen because she's got something to say. Yayne excels in the way she rolls jokes off that edge of comfort and finesses it with a tell it like it is teflon charm. Color her smart and powerful! Growing up in the diverse world of the Haight Ashbury, she gives us glimpses at different cultures: Ethiopian, American, and millennials. www.yayneabeba.com
Steve Lee just may be the only Chinese disabled stand up comedian in America. His comedy is centered around his experiences dealing with racism and living with disabilities on both continents, and his content is remarkably original. Rather than being encumbered by stereotypes, Steve is vitalized by them. He blends stories and punchlines to convey his belief that we are all equal - equally ignorant, fallible, weird, and desiring freedom. For Steve, comedy is a way to get people - including himself - to laugh about our own shortcomings and problems in our daily lives.
Lisa Geduldig is a local comic and comedy producer whos the creator, producer, and MC of a variety of comedy shows including Kung Pao Kosher Comedy (celebrating its 25th Anniversary this December!); Funny Girlz: A Smorgasbord of Women Comedians; The Color of Funny: A Multi-Cultural Comedy Show; and A Muslim, A Mormon, and A Jew Walk into A Bar: The Comedy of Religion.
