The Evolving Peacemaker -- A Commitment to Non-Violence -- Leona and Matthew Evans
Saturdays March 18 & 25, 1pm-3pm, Unity of San Luis Obispo
$10 for LLCC members, $20 for non-members
This is a two session course. Buying a single ticket for this course admits you to both sessions/classes.
How can we make a difference in the world? Will our civilization that is steeped in centuries of violence eventually learn how to interact with one another in respectful and compassionate ways? This two session course addresses these issues and is based on the book, The Evolving Peacemaker: A Commitment to Nonviolence by Leona Evans and her son, Matthew J. Evans.
Discussions will be based on Mahatma Gandhis timeless philosophy of nonviolence. The course will provide an overview of methods and practices designed to help students achieve inner peace, enhance the quality of their relationships, and understand the principles of nonviolent action.
In the first session, we will screen a documentary short film produced by Matthew called A Quest for Peace: Nonviolence Among Religions featuring Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. We will then examine the nature of passive violence, the value of self-acceptance, and the power of transforming anger into healing energy.
In the second session we will discuss the importance of developing our emotional intelligence, the need for forgiveness, the power of love, and Gandhi's four concepts of respect, understanding, acceptance, and appreciation.
Our goals for the course are: to help our students understand that peace is not a destination but a journey to realize that each of us is important to the peacemaking process, and the healthier we are emotionally, the more able we are to use our inner resources to make positive changes in the world, one person at a time. to have hope for our future and to realize the strength and power inherent in the human spirit to overcome adversity.
Leona Evans holds a Master of Arts in Religious Studies. She is the former Chair of the Metaphysics Department at Unity School for Religious Studies. Evans has been the minister at Unity of San Luis Obispo for the past twenty-two years, during which time she has taught numerous classes on the power of the mind to shape our destiny.
Matthew J. Evans is the creator of the short film: A Quest for Peace: Nonviolence Among Religions and won the Teen Art of Making Peace Award at the United Nations Third High Level Forum on a Culture of Peace in 2014.
