Cascadia: Our Geology, Our Selves
It turns out theres more to our geology than the "Big One." University of Portland environmental scientist Robert Butler explores the long, varied geologic history of the Pacific Northwest and the forces at work beneath Earths surface. By focusing on The Big One, a Cascadia subduction zone magnitude 9 earthquake and accompanying tsunami, we overlook two other types of earthquakes that are in fact more frequent and very important to understanding the regional earthquake and tsunami hazards. Butler is joined by Mercy Corps Director for U.S. Disaster Preparedness & Community Resilience, Susan Romanski, who brings new insight to the case that any disaster response is only as strong as the communitys readiness.
Butler specializes in earthquake education and spends much of his time trying to translate seismological research for middle school and high school teachers, students and the public. Although Butler retired from the University of Portland in May 2016, he is continuing his earthquake education work with Incorporated Research Institutes for Seismology (IRIS) Education and Public Outreach. Butler currently works with Jenda Johnson, an IRIS contractor, to produce animations about earthquakes.
Before taking on a domestic focus, Susan Romanski worked globally on Mercy Corps emergency team as the Deputy Director and served as the Director for Disaster Risk Reduction. Romanski spearheaded the agencys response to famine and the HIV/AIDS crisis in Zimbabwe, initiated humanitarian relief operations in Iraq, organized humanitarian assistance in Liberia, launched operations in Sri Lanka following the Pacific Rim tsunami, led initial relief efforts in Darfur, and was among the first international aid workers to arrive in Bam, Iran and northeast Pakistan following the devastating earthquakes in those areas. Romanski has a M.A. in international relations from Boston University and a B.S. in journalism and communications from the University of Florida.
