Sister Species is equal parts bitterness and longing, stillness and drive. Perching hearts heavy with ache and desire upon full-bodied guitar and accordion, bass and brass, sisters Abby and Emily Kastrul (P PL) transform two decades of sibling rivalry into raw, unapologetic, experimental pop songs. The sisters' harmonies amplify a tender candidness, lifted by danceable beats and unexpected trumpet arrangements that make you shiver, swoon, and politely request more. With the addition of Jake Baldwin (Har Mar Superstar, McNasty Brass Band), Ryan Hays (Matra), Lars Johnson (McNasty Brass Band), Sten Johnson (McNasty Brass Band, New Sound Underground), and Noah Ophoven-Baldwin (Percheron, Six Families, Drone Band), the Kastrul sisters leave their soft folk roots in the ground as they present their new full-length album Closer Now. Har-di-Har is the art-pop duo of Andrew and Julie Thoreen. They make depthy pop that will hopefully make you feel things.
Taking almost a year and half of making music together was never an intended or easy decision for husband-wife duo, Har-di-Har (Julie and Andrew Thoreen). Unity and equal collaboration in art making has always been a core part of the band (to make their point, they even used to split up the drum set, playing different parts of it at once to sound as if they were one drummer).
But in May 2015, after spending over three years closely collaborating together, releasing a well-received EP and touring aggressively cross-country, creative and personal differences began to creep in, pushing them apart until they were suddenly faced with the decision many bands with married people encounter: either end the music or end the relationship.
Choosing commitment over convenience, and desiring to maintain both the relationship and art, the two decided to navigate through and in the uncertainty, instead of around it. After a year of silence, Har-di-Har came back together to write the narrative about this tension-and-release season, which will become their first full-length album, due out this year.
