Celebrated Iranian director Kiomars Moradi will make his U.S. debut in Minnesota with his internationally-acclaimed play, The Skyless City. Through stories of women who put their fates in others' hands, The Skyless City resonates the universal truths of human trafficking.
The Skyless City has received international praise as well as censorship. While premiering in Tehran in 2009 to enthusiastic audiences, the play was censored by the Iranian government for its content about trafficking women from the Middle East. Moradi subsequently faced numerous problems within the country's political system. At France's Avignon OFF festival in 2010, The Skyless City was named "Best Foreign Theater." Moradi also showcased the play at the Laboratory Theater Festival in Italy in the summer of 2012. Moradi is proud to now bring the play to Minnesota.
The Skyless City, written by Pourya Azarbayjani and Moradi, tells the story of four women, from different parts of the Middle East, who try to escape their lives and find a new journey. Nasrin and Alma are in an abandoned subway station in Paris, France. They are waiting to receive their passports from the human trafficker who smuggled them from the Middle East. They remember other women who were with them in this difficult journey and didn't make it.
Taous Khazem and Eliza Rasheed will perform as Nasrin (from Iran in the story) and Alma (from Afghanistan). Nazgol Naderian and Fatemeh Naghavi, two actresses from Iran, will interact with Khazem and Rasheed through video. Moradi takes advantage of multimedia, in collaboration with Farshid Akhlaghi, to show the multiple locations of the story.
Run Time: The play runs 60 minutes, no intermission. Ages: The Skyless City is recommended for ages 16+.
Group Rates: A Group Rate ($10 per ticket for 6 or more tickets), is available for any performance. Please e-mail info@dreamlandarts.com to purchase Group Rate tickets.
