To open its 5th season, Seattle Jewish Chorale is pleased to invite the entire community to an interactive, family-friendly concert, Light the Candles: A Hanukkah Celebration for All! For Jews and non-Jews alike, this is a wonderful opportunity to learn about and enjoy the Hanukkah holiday! Come hear and sing songs of the season in Hebrew, English, Yiddish and Ladino--some traditional and familiar (Al Hanissim, Maoz Tzur), and others that are less well-known (Drey Dreydeleh, Light the Legend). Contemporary favorites will include Tom Lehrer's jazzy and humorous Chanukah in Santa Monica and Debbie Friedman's Build This World, a lively, gospel-style song of unity and peace for all people. The Chorale will also perform excerpts from Eight Days of Chanukah, a new eight-movement work by Abraham Kaplan, Professor Emeritus of Choral Studies at the UW, and former Director of the Seattle Symphony Chorale.
Following the concert, the audience is invited to a coffee and tea reception. Holiday goodies will be available for sale as snacks and gifts.
Co-sponsored by Westside Unitarian Universalist Congregation and Kol HaNeshamah: West Seattle's Progressive Synagogue Community.
Tickets will be available at the door. Un(der)employed pay as able.
Seattle Jewish Chorale is conducted by Music Director Mary Pat Graham and accompanied by pianist Harumi Makiyama, joined by guest artists Will Dowd (percussion) and John Stiffler (clarinet).
Additional performances: Dec 9 in Olympia; Dec 12 in Bellevue (see separate listings on BPT).
