An Evening with Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein, Feb 16th, Chicago
Join us at a Cocktail Reception for Ricki Lake, Executive Producer, and Abby Epstein, Director, of "The Business of Being Born" on Saturday, February 16th from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Linda Warren Gallery, 1052 W. Fulton Market, Chicago. All proceeds will benefit the Coalition for Illinois Midwifery.
THE BUSINESS OF BEING BORN Film Synopsis Birth is a miracle, a rite of passage, a natural part of life. But birth is also big business. In the new documentary THE BUSINESS OF BEING BORN Executive Producer Ricki Lake and Director Abby Epstein question the way American women have babies, and explore this fundamental question: should most births be viewed as a natural life process, or should every delivery be treated as a potential medical emergency? THE BUSINESS OF BEING BORN makes a compelling argument for more humanistic approaches to birth, challenging the ideals of our technocratic society which places absolute faith in machines and technology. It is a must-see for anyone thinking of having a baby. More information: http://www.thebusinessofbeingborn.com
The Coalition for Illinois Midwifery, formed in 2000, seeks to ensure the availability of safe, licensed direct-entry midwifery services for families who choose to give birth at home in the state of Illinois.
The Coalition unites organizations and individuals that endorse the Illinois Midwifery Initiative to work toward change in Illinois. Its ultimate goal is to pass licensure which will enable direct-entry midwives, who carry the Certified Professional Midwives (CPM) credential to practice legally and in harmony with other Illinois maternity care providers. Linda Warren Gallery is proud to open the New Year with A Fire Which Burns - a solo exhibition of work by a very promising young artist, Ruijun Shen. In this new series of paintings, drawings, animation and installation Shen continues to demonstrate a strong inclination toward combining traditional Chinese painting methods and style (learned at a very young age from her well-known artist father) with her experiences from Western culture (where she has earned two MFAs, most recently in 2007 at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago). Purposefully allowing the influence of these two technically, and in many respects, opposing cultural locations to enjoy free reign within her work, the universality of their emotional and spiritual components are more ascertained.
