Lecture: Americans and their Homes: Elmhurst, DuPage County, Chicagoland, and Beyond
The American home -- whether in the twenty-first century or the nineteenth century -- enables us to understand the aspirations of its occupants. Exploring their exterior and interior attributes, our geographic focus will encompass Elmhurst as well as DuPage County and the six-county region comprising metropolitan Chicago. This visually enriched presentation will emphasize the changing norms and expectations that Americans -- past and present -- associate with their home place.
Michael H. Ebner is the James D. Vail III Professor of American history, emeritus and a life trustee of the Chicago History Museum. He is the author of the award-winning Creating Chicago's North Shore, A Suburban History (University of Chicago Press, 1988) and is completing a book entitled Metropolitan Revisions: Storylines from American History. Professor Ebner has been recognized for teaching excellence by the American Historical Association, the Chicago Tribune, and Lake Forest College.
