Bakia Quartet
Bakia Quartet is a contemporary improvisation group that specializes in multi-disciplinary performances. Formed in 2013, Bakia Quartet began by presenting improvised live scores to a series of classic and contemporary silent films and has since began to branch out to collaborate with other creative mediums including dance and theater. The series of silent film performances Bakia Quartet holds, flow seamlessly between musical performance and incidental music surrounding the projection of films from classic directors such as Chaplin, Dalí, Duchamp, Man Ray, Méliès and others. Rooted in surrealism and leaning towards avant-garde, Bakia Quartet's performances blend musical genre and works with other mediums such as film to allow both the music and the film to be viewed anew and re-imagined. The films this night will be a selection of contemporary and classic silent films including, The Unchanging Sea directed by D.W. Griffith, Old Man and the Goblin directed by Mark Caballero and Seamus Walsh, and Heart of the World directed by Guy Maddin, as well as some found footage. Bakia Quartet is: Kenji Herbert - Guitar Asher Kurtz - Guitar Zack Nestel-Patt - Bass Charlie Van Kirk - Percussion
