Rose Polenzani, the fine singer songwriter from Boston and known to many through her years of solo and band shows (not to mention Sub Rosa here at the Lizard) shares the evening with Dave Godowsky, the quirky and introspective pop singer songwriter with a big knack for clever. This will not be a duo show but rather individual sets from each artist.
Rose's song "You Were Drunk" was named "Best New Song" at Mountain Stage Newsong contest 2008!
Rose Polenzani was first noticed for her 1998 unanimous win in the Chicago Lilith Fair competition, closely followed by her debut at the Newport Folk Festival. She spent several years touring and recording, moving from her native Chicago to California to Boston, where she has was recently nominated for Best Female Vocalist in the 2007 Boston Music Awards. Rose has released records both privately and on labels such as Rykodisc and Daemon Records.
Dave Godowskys first public foray into music came in 2009 when, after opening for Bon Iver, Justin Vernon invited him to make an album at his Wisconsin studio. The album (All You Love Is Need) was released under the pseudonym John Shade (named after a Nabokov character from the 1962 novel/poem Pale Fire). Despite several sold out shows (backed by a string quartet) and critical acclaim for the record, Godowsky opted to turn behind the scenes and focus on the business side of music. In the seven years since, Godowsky has discovered & signed bands including Nathaniel Rateliff and Delta Spirit and managed bands including Against Me!, Cass McCombs, Speedy Ortiz, Okkervil River, and Gene Ween.
I remember looking at the state of the industry and the state of my finances, and it was too much risk and not enough reward, Godowsky recalls. Working on behalf of other artists seemed more sensible, all things considered. But I always kept writing. And I dont think that creative energy is something that ever goes away.
Now, hes released Pregret. The album was recorded near his apartment in Brooklyn and features guest appearances from singers Adam Duritz and Lianne LaHavas. Rather than go through the promotional channels he oversees for his clients, Godowsky has made the music available for free online. I just want the music to live the world rather than in my head, he explains.
