Woment of the Northwest
Spearheaded by actor/writer Jacqueline Dandeneau, researcher Tammy Rae Scott, and historian Edith Butler, this new production is a montage of women's lives behind the redwood curtain. From female emancipation to prostitution, and motherhood to adventure, WOTN explores the choices and challenges of women a hundred years now past. Cast members have written songs and dialogue based on historical documents, plus interviews and story circles conducted with local families in the last year. The tales range from comedic to gripping and gritty, as the experiences of female Olympians, immigrants, cross-dressers, bohemians, mothers and schoolmarms are revealed.
The all-woman cast and band includes Jacqueline Dandeneau, Laura Munoz, Siena Nelson, Ali Freedlund, Julie Clark, Ciara Cheli-Colando, Jada Owens, Julie Froblom, Jill Petricca, Dharla Curry, Jan Bramlett, Rebecca Zetler and Tammy Rae Scott, plus contributors from the Native Women's Collective. Costumes are by Lydia Foreman with sets by Siena Nelson. The show is supported in part by a grant from Cal Humanities - an independent nonprofit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities - and by the Tracy Memorial Trust and the Ivy Erene Hughes & Carl G. Lundgren funds of the Humboldt Area Foundation. The Wha Nika Club, Humboldt Soroptimists, HSU Humboldt Room, and Native Women's Collective have been instrumental in providing material and support.
