Imagine if Mozart hadn't written down his scores, but instead, each generation of performers taught the next from memory. And imagine if each had changed what they pleased to suit their own abilities, desires, and the fashion of the times. What would we have today?
That has been the fate of The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and The Nutcracker. These great Tchaikovsky ballets have lived on, despite this, because of the strength and mastery of the originals. If only they had been written down.
