Tucson Cine Mexico presents EL CHARRO DE TOLUQUILLA * Free Screening *
EL CHARRO DE TOLUQUILLA
Dir: José Villalobos Romero. Mexico, 2016, 90 min. In Spanish with English subtitles

El Charro de Toluquilla tells the story of Jaime Garcíaa mariachi singer and braggart who lives his life like a chauvinistic vintage Mexican movie character, but with one difference: he is HIV-positive. Winner of the Audience and Best Documentary awards at the Guadalajara Film Festival, José Villalobos remarkable debut film offers a playful and incisive look at masculinity through the Mexican popular figure of the charro cantor (singing cowboy) and as Jaime chooses between maintaining his reckless lifestyle or becoming a family man.

José Villalobos Romero directs with a wry, amused sense of distance that deepens to a sense of sympathy and ultimately allows Jaime a moment of triumph. (Film Forward)

(Film Forward)
