METROPOLIS
Filmed in Germany in 1925, Fritz Langs classic science-fiction masterpiece about oppressive leadership and social division nonetheless has a great deal to tell us about our current political climate. The year is 2026. In the futuristic city of Metropolis underground workers toil to keep the city operating while urban planners reign from above in their high-rise tower complexes. The son of the city's mastermind falls in love with Maria, a working class prophet who predicts the coming of a savior to mediate their differences.
The movie was made at a time when audio and video couldnt be recorded simultaneously. Organists would improvise (yes, make up on the spot!) an entire film score as the soundtrack to the movie. Peter Krasinski, renowned organist and silent film accompanist, will do this for us on the magnificently colorful pipe organ at Marble Collegiate Church.
If you haven't heard or seen anything like this, you need to! In these times of division and uncertainty such a story could hardly be more relevant.
