The Mike Casey Trio
Since selling out their New York debut at the legendary Minton's in Harlem, the Mike Casey trio have been finishing their 1st album (recorded live at The Side Door Jazz Club, which Downbeat calls "One of the top 100 jazz clubs worldwide) which is due for a February 2017 release.
Musically it's best described as a accessible, unique modern, upbeat jazz trio - we appeal equally to jazz aficionados and casual music fans.
A lifetime passion for the saxophone began when Mike took to the saxophone like a fish to water in the 5th grade. Eager to expand his musical horizons, he attended the Greater Hartford Academy for the Performing Arts in high school, where he studied in the jazz program. He is a graduate of the acclaimed Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz (University of Hartford's Hartt School, CT). While at Hartt he was fortunate to study with renowned jazz artists such as saxophonists Abraham Burton, Rene McLean, & Javon Jackson, trombonist Steve Davis, and bassist Nat Reeves.
Nominated for Best Jazz in the CT Music Awards, Mike has performed and delighted a wide range of audiences throughout the Northeast. He has shared the stage with some of the finest jazz artists in the world such as: MARC CARY, CHARLES TOLLIVER, DJ LOGIC, DUANE EUBANKS, RASHAAN CARTER, BENITO GONZALEZ, TARUS MATEEN, ZACCAI CURTIS, UGONNA OKEGWO, STEVE DAVIS, NAT REEVES, RENE MCLEAN, CRAIG HARRIS, BRANDEE YOUNGER, & DEZRON DOUGLAS. In early 2015, Mike was one of 24 young jazz musicians/composers worldwide selected to participate in the prestigious 2 week Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., where he was fortunate to learn from celebrated jazz artists Jason Moran, Eric Harland, Eric Revis, J.D. Allen, Carmen Lundy, Andre Hayward, and Cyrus Chestnut. Mike has performed at well-respected venues & festivals such as Dizzys Club (Jazz at Lincoln Center, NYC), The Kennedy Center (DC), , Mintons, Ginny's Supper Club (NYC), Exit Zero Jazz Festival (NJ), & NYC Winter Jazz Fest, in addition to consistently performing in the top jazz venues Connecticut has to offer. He is also a teaching artist with 4 years of experience teaching saxophone (and jazz) to all ages. Mike has enchanted audiences young & old alike, performing a unique blend of upbeat, accessible, original music and exciting arrangements of jazz standards with a mature lyricism and a sound that commands the attention of the audience.
Using a Janus-like vision simultaneously encompassing both the past and the future, Mike filters his ideas through his own musical and life experiences, honing his own voice to create his uniquely original brand of glorious saxophone madness and gladness, well-honed, accessible, and joyful. Owen McNally, WNPR His playing is powerful, and he plays with a strength and style which is both engaging and appealing. In his approach, Mikes style has the appeal of some of the jazz greats but at the same time he has not borrowed heavily style-wise but introduces touches which are pure Casey.
