MERCEDES GOMEZ BENET
Born in Mexico, D.F. and a graduate of the National Conservatory of Music, Mercedes Gomez Benet studied harp with Judith Flores Alatorre (Mex), Marian Shaffer (USA), Marjorie Tyre (USA) y Nicanor Zabaleta (Spain). She has been a harpist with the Mexican State Orchestra and the University of Mexico Philharmonic, and has represented Mexico in festivals in the US, Venezuela, Argentina, Germany, Spain, Poland, Sweden and France. In 1994 Ms. Gomez Benet directed the compilation of traditional "jarochos" songs, entitled Chilpachole de Arpa. She was Artist in Residence at the University of California, Davis, in 1999, and at at Banff Center for the Arts in 2005. Since 1999, with Janet Paulus, she has been half of the harp duo, SONDOS. They are two veteran musicians whose rich and varied cultural experiences inform their shared delight of chamber music.
Ms. Gomez Benet is currently pursuing a Master's in Harp at the Royal Conservatory in Stockholm, Sweden, and is a harp professor at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico.
