POW!Thanet Presents Scratch Event: Women's Voices
A Scratch event is an opportunity for artists to test out their material on an audience; to get immediate feedback; and make appropriate changes or develop their work for the future. For the audience, it is an opportunity to see new, up and coming performances and to help inform the artists professional practice; and the overall development of the work shown. In the months leading up to POW!Thanet, three female creative artists will run workshops with students from St Lawrence College, Ramsgate. The Scratch event will also give students an opportunity to showcase their own work in development, alongside the creative artists.
Victoria Barrow-Williams is the co-writer and performer from the female comedy duo Yangalang. In 2015, Yanglang first performed The Temp at the Folkestone Women of the World Festival, which then show cased at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival later that year. The Temp like most of Victorias work explores identity, in particular gender and race. Victoria favours using techniques which are immersive or sometimes explosive, with her work often being framed within a high tempo and dynamic soundscape. Victoria has begun writing her new one woman show, which will examine her own journey of identity as a mixed raced woman. As well as performing, Victoria takes huge pleasure in creating opportunities for young people through workshops; creating and delivering workshops which often cover her passion of identity and empowerment. Most recently her Culturosity, a workshop which was curated for Canterbury Christ Church University, has been chosen by the Higher Education Funding Council for England to be included in their 2017 report on Sector Leading Innovative practice in advancing Equality and Diversity.
Victoria is passionate about supporting and nurturing British new writing produced by female artists. She believes the voice of the female artist is currently under-represented in our British theatres, and that it is vital therefore to provide opportunities for them to be heard.
Brigitte Aphrodite is a punk poet, musician, theatre maker and feminist showgirl. With her band she has played Leeds and Reading Festivals, Bestival, Latitude, Kendal Calling and supported Kate Nash and Josie Long on their UK tours. Brigitte's debut studio album is due for release in the new year to coincide with her self-penned musical My Beautiful Black Dog which debuted at the Bush Theatre in London last year. Brigitte is a proud mentor for the youth charity, Arts Emergency. She has facilitated workshops for Ideastap, the National Youth Theatre, the Eggtooth Project and has invented the sport Frunning (a combination of running and dancing!)
Jessica Jordan-Wrench studied Drama (specialising in directing) at the University of Kent before going on to train in Classical Acting at Central and MXAT (Russia). As an actress and director credits have included work at The Rose, The Soho Theatre and The Whitechapel Gallery, and with companies such as dreamthinkspeak, Lightworks and 19;29. She is the co-artistic director of the Tom Thumb Theatre, a converted Victorian coach house in Margate.
