Helene Smart and John Engerman & Michael King, March 17 @ 7 PM
Welcome to Seattle's March Is Cabaret Month Festival 2017!
MARCH IS CABARET MONTH Presents: HELENE SMART in "NIGHT IN THE CITY"
Helene celebrates the art of cabaret with a selection of songs that fuzz the lines of country, jazz and folk - because who can say what cabaret is, anyway?
HELENE SMART
Helene has been practicing the art of cabaret ever since she discovered it was the ideal way to combine her love of music with her fascination for the well-chosen word. She is honored to be appearing with Darin Clendenin, one of the Northwest's finest pianists and arrangers. Helene most recently appeared with Darin at the Manor House on Bainbridge Island. Helene has performed with Shelly Markham at the Gardenia Lounge in LA, with Rick Jensen at The Piano Bar on Mykonos, with Daryl Spadaccini at the Admiral Theater in Bremerton, and with Stan Keen at the RUINS.
MARCH IS CABARET MONTH Presents: JOHN ENGERMAN & MICHAEL KING in "TOM LEHRER: A PROPHET BEFORE HIS TIME"
Tom Lehrer, known for such irreverent songs as "Poisoning Pigeons In The Park" and "Vatican Rag", was also a political satirist with a biting wit. And, as it turns out, a prophet of foibles we seem to be experiencing all over again. In the spirit of Tom Lehrer's original delivery - a couple of guys and a piano - Mike King and John Engerman present a set of his most relevant songs, occasionally updated to reflect the current political climate change.
JOHN ENGERMAN
John has been writing, arranging, music directing and playing for theatrical productions since the mid 70s. As a composer, highlights include Ronnie Bwana Jungle Guide, The Big Bad Wolf (and How He Got That Way), Ming the Rude (Empty Space Theatre), The Ballad of Mary Reade, (Bathhouse Theatre), and Prince Brat and the Whipping Boy (Seattle Childrens Theatre). Cabaret shows featuring his arrangements of others tunes include The Fabulous Sateens, The Sirens of Swing, and numerous one-woman shows with his wife, Jayne Muirhead.
MICHAEL KING
Mike King represents clients before state and federal appellate courts, to which he has presented over 150 oral arguments shows that run for just one performance. Mike is also a member of Arne Zaslove's Hit & Run Theater Company. His roles have included Francis Tasbrough in Sinclair Lewis's "It Can't Happen Here"; the Judge in Freddie Brinster's "Dark Farce"; Professor Willard in "Our Town"; and President Harry Truman in "In the Realm of Whispering Ghosts: If Truman Met Einstein." Mike also appeared in Hit & Run's musical review of the songs of Tom Lehrer, "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park."
SHOWTIME: 7 pm. Doors at 6:00.
