The Final Member
"I try to provoke people. To make them look differently at things, you know? To explore things that other people don't." So says Sigurdur Hjartarson, author, scholar, and creator of the Icelandic Phallological Museum, and this surprisingly profound documentary proves that he has done just that. With smart, probing subjects more charmingly strange than anything Christopher Guest could dream up, and featuring the jaw-droppingly beautiful Arctic landscape, Final Member is equal parts fascinating biography and bizarre thriller as it follows Hjartarson?s nail-biting quest to complete his collection, delving deeply into the motivations of him and the two men vying to be first to donate. It is easy to see how this film would be original, intriguing, humorous, and just plain wrong, but it's far less expected how it showcases Hjartarson's belief that by broaching taboo subjects you can get to the heart of the human experience. There are moments in this film that are profoundly sad, exploring loneliness, insecurity, and failure, and moments of such soul-lifting triumph, with affirmations of love, friendship, and the power of the human spirit, that you simply won't believe you've been so moved by one man's quest to acquire another man's penis.
