Three for Silver with Blue Moon Marquee & The Burying Ground
Live @ The WISE is proud to present Portland's Three for Silver they will be joined by our Alberta bred west coast landed gypsy blues band Blue Moon Marquee and Vancouver's own The Burying Ground.
Three for Silver runs off the friction of opposing forces. Thunderous bass and dreamy melody, baritone growl and smooth soprano, new music and timeworn style. The band creates a sound that is both wholly unique and yet familiar. Theyre Theyre the feeling you don't quite have a word for, or the town you just arrived in but could already call home. If it's folk music, no one has found the country of origin. Musical comparisons include such acts as Tin Hat Trio, Man Man, Tom Waits, and Kronos Quartet. Three Three For Silver grew as the brainchild of Willo Sertain and Lucas Warford, during a long international tour with the Underscore Orchestra and was named for a half-mistaken poem recalled once in a dream. It launched in 2013 and performs primarily as a trio, but also in "big band" form with drums, horns, and strings. http://threeforsilver.tumblr.com/
Blue Moon Marquee is a Gypsy Blues band born of the wild rose foothills of Alberta. They currently make their home in an island shack on the coast of the Salish Sea ,British Columbia. A.W. Cardinal (vocals/guitar) and Jasmine Colette a.k.a. Badlands Jass (vocals/bass/drums) write and perform original compositions influenced by anything that swings, jumps or grooves. Artists such as Lonnie Johnson, Louis Armstrong, Blind Willie Jonson, Charley Patton, Howlin' Wolf, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Tom Waits, Memphis Minnie, and Django Reinhardt are deeply infused in the soul of their music.
Blue Moon Marquee is primarily a live duo with the energy and sound of a full band. Colette, the rhythm section, not only commands the upright bass but also brings the swing with her feet on the kick drum, snare and high hat, all while singing harmonies. Cardinal is of the screaming and hollering blues ilk with distinctive thick and smoky vocals that barrel out like a raging bull. His guitar crackles with the swinging energy of jazz tinged blues. www.bluemoonmarquee.com
The Burying Ground is an upbeat blues string band that brings the fire of punk to the technical prowess and distinct sounds of such early blues, country and jazz masters as Blind Blake, Bessie Smith, Gary Davis, Memphis Minnie, Big Bill Broonzy, Jimmie Rodgers and many others.
If youve ever woken up in the morning and your first thought was a song, youll understand something of the devotional quality that drives their music. Woodys complex blues guitar and rags are punctuated and raised high by Devoras tightly syncopated washboard, with playful rolls and staccato jumps and stops.
The Burying Ground formed in 2014 as a duo, but Woody and Devora have been playing together since 2009 as members of The Dire Wolves, an acoustic blues string band and darlings of the East Van punk scene. They are steeped in influences from 1920s ragtime, country, Mississippi blues and New Orleans Jazz to the backyard punk shows and great barrooms across Western Canada and beyond. In the past year of frequent touring, The Burying Ground has developed a bright clarity, adding several toe tapping dance numbers to their diverse sets. www.theburyingground.com
