Concert 3: Cantata Misericordium | Cantata of Mercy
Cantata Misericordium by Benjamin Britten Chorale on an Old French Carol by Benjamin Britten Hymn to Saint Cecilia by Benjamin Britten Dark Night of the Soul by Ola Gjeilo Luminous Night of the Soul by Ola Gjeilo In 2013 we'll celebrate the 100th birthday anniversary of famed English composer Benjamin Britten with his Cantata Misericordium, written in 1963 for the centennial of the International Red Cross. The text, relating the parable of the Good Samaritan, is poignantly relevant today. Paired with Britten's short masterpiece will be two exhilarating companion works by a rising star in the choral world, Ola Gjeilo (pronounced "YAY-low"). Inspired by the grace and passion of a mystical text by St. John of the Cross, Gjeilo offers intense dramatic exchanges between choir, piano solo, and strings.
This concert will be performed one time: Saturday, June 8, 2013, at 8:00 p.m. at Saint Mark's Cathedral, Seattle
