Donald Davis presents "Writing as a Second Language"
"Writing as a Second Language" is for anyone who loves story and is fascinated by the connections between the spoken and written word.

Teachers, parents, storytellers and writers will all benefit from the day.

Donald Davis' emphasis in the workshop will be on the whole oral and kinesthetic package which is our spoken language.  Davis will teach that we must step back into our familiar first language  - the spoken word - as our creative medium and learn to "translate" into that new language called writing. Years of experience has shown him, and the teachers he works with, that oral language and storytelling are the keys to success in written language.

The fee for the day includes lunch.

Donald Davis is one of America's favorite storytellers.  He has performed throughout the United States and the world, including the Smithsonian Institution, the World's Fair, and as guest host of National Public Radio's "Good Evening."   He is widely regarded as a "master's master", and as one of the principal movers of the nationwide storytelling revival.

Mr. Davis grew up in the mountains of southern Appalachia, and learned the art of telling stories and tales from his family of traditional storytellers who had lived on the same North Carolina land since 1871. Davis takes his inspiration from those tales he heard while growing up, including gentle fairy tales, scary mountain lore, ancient Welsh and Scottish folktales, and nourishing true-to-life stories of his own neighbors and kin.

The SMCC Storytelling Institute is one of only a handful of academic programs in the nation to focus on this ancient art form, and is the only Arizona institution to offer an Academic Certificate in Storytelling.  SMCC storytelling programs are not limited to children's events, but often contain sophisticated themes and content, and are suitable for both adults and young people.
