Steel Magnolias

The entire play takes place in Truvy's Beauty Shop which is located in Chinquipin County in Louisiana. Truvy has just hired Annelle to help fill a position at the shop. The day Annelle is hired is a very busy day as one of the town's lovely young ladies, Shelby Eatenton is about to be married to Jackson Latcherie, Jr. Shelbys mother, M'Lynn Eatenton is beside herself since her husband Drum is trying to scare the birds out of a magnolia tree which may or may not belong to crotchety Ouiser Boudreaux. All of the blossoms are falling off the tree and Ouiser's dog, Rhett, is so traumatized by the sounds of the gunshots that he is losing what little hair he has left. Town socialite Clairee Belcher, Ouiser's life long friend who is owner of a radio station and the former mayor's wife.

Written by Robert Harling, the "Steel Magnolias" contains some of the wittiest one liners of any script. The beauty of the play is that Harling shifts the tone from one of comedy to very serious drama.
