HUSH: Ella Cinders
HUSH and step back to a time before television, during the advent of the automobile, and before the urbanization of America. Once home to 14 theaters, Somerville was the most densely populated city in the country, and going to the movies was a social experience where people came together to share news, gossip and be entertained. A century later we celebrate the art of silent film with live music performed by Noxaphonic, curated by Erica Baptiste and presented by The Rockwell.
Wednesday, Feb. 1st, 7:30PM (doors 7:00PM) Ella Cinders (1926, starring Colleen Moore) Ella Cinders is a 1926 American silent comedy starring Colleen Moore and directed by Alfred E.Green. The story is based on the 1925 comic strip of the same name written by Bill Consulman, making it one of the earliest live-action film versions of a popular comic strip. This was not the first Cinderella tale but one of the more popular renditions from the 20s that survives today. 'Rags to riches' stories were particularly famous during the 1920s when prosperity was believed to be right around the corner. This tale might not be quite the cinderella story you are familiar with, as there are no fairy godmothers and no magic pumpkins. Colleen Moore is known as a famous flapper and one of the better comedians in motion pictures at the time. Although this role was a bit outlandish for Moore, her charming character and versatile look was perfect for the role and her performance turned this film into a great success. Ella Cinders is known today as Colleen Moores most recognizable film and was preserved by the United States National Film Registry for its cultural and historical significance.
