Dames Who Read - February 21, 2017
THE UMBRIAN THURSDAY NIGHT SUPPER CLUB by Marlena de Blasi is a novel telling the story of five old friends who gather weekly in an old stone house in Umbria, where they pool their meager ingredients, cook a dinner together from those ingredients and then sit down to eat, drink and talk. They share life stories, old memories of loves and ageing, food, feuds and, above all, their friendship.
The book is the perfect springboard for our group of Dames Who Read, who will spend a cold Chicago evening together, sharing not only ingredients and the task of cooking, but sharing stores and friendship.
As you read, take a look into your cupboards and see what you could contribute not a completed dish, but an ingredient that could become part of the communally made meal, or a wine to go with it. Plan now for a long convivial evening of cooking together and telling stories!
