Politics & Prose Presents GEORGE SAUNDERS
One of our most distinctive short-story writers, George Saunders has won four National Magazine Awards for fiction, the Story Prize, and the World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story. His long-awaited first novel, LINCOLN IN THE BARDO, unfolds in a Georgetown cemetery in February 1862, where Abraham Lincoln has just buried his eleven-year-old son. But this is history with a supernatural twist. Willie, according to Tibetan tradition, is between one life and the next, a state known as the bardo. Until he moves on, his soul, like the nation his father leads, is contested territory. Saunders brings to life an uncanny chorus of spirits who lament their own states, chafe against the class and race distinctions that still constrain them, and advise Willie and his father, who visits his son's tomb several times during one night.
