Jazz at the Chimes - Harvey Wainapel's Alegritude
Saxophonist/clarinetist Harvey Wainapel and his quartet ALEGRITUDE will present a panorama of modern instrumental music from Brazil. Since 2000, Harvey has been spending 2-3 months each year exploring Brazil, performing, recording, and researching a wide variety of musical scenes there. The group ALEGRITUDE was born out of Wainapels desire to share the joy and beauty of the music he has discovered during these travels. Besides well-known rhythms such as samba and bossa nova, ALEGRITUDE presents other fresh aspects of Brazilian jazz, based on folkloric genres of that country, so rich and varied in its musical traditions. This exciting group has performed at Yoshis Jazz Club, Stanford University, and the San Jose Jazz Festival, among other venues. The quartet's repertoire, while not focusing on the usual "standards," is quite accessible and gives a good picture of what's happening in today's Brazilian music scene.
This concert is part of the Jazz at the Chimes series held at the stunning Julia Morgan Chapel of the Chimes, an historical landmark building. This intimate space seats about 160 in linear pews.
Tickets may also be available at the door (cash only), based on availability. On site box office opens at 12:30.
