John Dominic Crossan | The Challenge of the Christian Bible, March 3, 4, 5, 2017
Sessions include a Friday evening opening lectures, workshops all day Saturday, a Sunday morning lecture, and sermon during the Sunday services. Crossan will include a video tribute to Marcus Borg, his long-time colleague and collaborator. Dom and Marcus visited our UCUCC Lecture Series together and separately often over the past ten years. Marcus died in 2014 and is very much missed by all who knew him and knew of him. Watch for more program details to come.
And, because it's our10th Anniversary weekend, we're having a party! Please join us for a simple lunch gathering on Sunday, March 5th after service to celebrate 10 years of lectures. There is no charge for the luncheon but reservations will be greatly appreciated. The Lecture Series began in the winter of 2007 with lectures by Marcus Borg in February of that year. Volunteers and help is needed! Let us know if you'd like to help by emailing lectureseries@univeristyucc.org.
10th Anniversary Theme and Sessions: THE CHALLENGE OF THE CHRISTIAN BIBLE Based on the book: How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian: Struggling with Divine Violence from Genesis through Revelation, March, 2015.
Sessions: Friday Evening , March 3, 7 8:30 pm: Original Sin: Sexual Temptation or Escalatory Violence? Since sin is originally mentioned in Genesis 4:7, why did Christianity locate original sin with Adam, Eve, and sex rather than with Cain, Abel, and violence? If civilization saves us from barbarism, what saves us from civilization?
Saturday Workshops, March 4, 9 am - 3 pm 9:00am: Covenantal Law: Human Destiny or Divine Sanction? In Genesis 1 humans are stewards of Gods world and sanctions for failure are never even mentioned. But in Deuteronomy 28 is all about rewards and punishments. Where is the evidence for divine punishments as distinct from the terrible evidence of human consequences?
II:00am: Gods Kingdom: Violent Revolt or Non-Violent Resistance? Caught permanently between warring super-powers, Israel dreamed of an end to warfare, oppression, and injustice. Not, however, simply as its dream of peace for itself, but as Gods dream of peace for the world. Bu was this to be realized violently or non-violently?
1:30pm: Christianitys Criterion: Historical Jesus or Apocalyptic Jesus The historical rides into Jerusalem on a Peace-Donkey but the apocalyptic Jesus returns on a War-Horse. Did Jesus change his mind or Christianity change its Jesus? Is the non-violent resistance of Jesus both the revelation of Gods Dream for the world and the norm and criterion of the entire Christian Bible?
Sunday Morning,March 5, 9 9:45 am Is God Violent? The Challenge of the Christian Bible In the Christian Biblefrom Genesis through RevelationGod is a God of both non-violent distributive justice and violent retributive justice. But Jesus, for Christians the image and revelation of that same God, acts only fromand dies fordemanding non-violent distributive justice in an Israel under imperial Romanization. How can a non-violent Jesus mirror a violent God?
