History Roundtable: Boss Tweed
Learn the story of the rise of America's first and most famous political machine, Explore the meteoric rise and tragic fall of perhaps the most powerful political boss in U.S. history: William Magear Tweed. While utterly self-interested and corrupt, "Boss Tweed" also used his power to lay the foundation for much of the New York City we know today and gave generously from his own ill-gotten gains to assist the unfortunate. Explore the dark side of America's rough and tumble 19th century politics and the fascinating dual nature of the man who conceived the soul of modern New York.
This presentation is brought to you by the Greater Astoria Historical Society (http://astorialic.org/) and the New York Nineteenth Century Society (http://nyncs.org/).
