Glen Swarts bio: The renowned Maestro Mitch Miller, in conducting Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony with its famous and difficult French horn solos noted, "I have conducted every major symphony in America - and I can say without equivocation that Glen Swarts is as good or better than any French Horn player in any top ten orchestras in the U. S. A."
Glen is a star product of the local Bay Area music scene. He grew up in Vallejo and received his Bachelors and Masters in Music Performance from San Francisco State University. Competition for the position of principal horn in one of the four Majors (SF Symphony, SF Opera, SF Ballet, SF's Theatre Orchestra) is intense. One must clearly standout as the best not just amongst the locals but those national and international professionals who come attempting to land one of these prized positions. Early on Glen became principal horn with the Carmel Bach Festival and the Berkeley, Marin, Fremont and Modesto Symphonies where he was also featured soloist. In 1993 he was was invited to France to be a guest artist in the Opera Lyon's world premiere production of Debussy's Rodrigue et Chimene with Kent Nagano conducting, the recording of which is on the Erato label.
If you have been to a Broadway musical in San Francisco at any time since 1988 when he assumed the position of principal French Horn for the orchestra of the pre-eminent theatrical entertainment company of Shorenstein Hays Nederlander that owns and operates the Curran, Golden Gate and Orpheum Theatres, you have heard Glen's marvelous work in the major productions of Wicked, Les Miserables, The Lion King, Billy Elliot, Phantom of the Opera and innumerable others. In 2000 he traveled for three years with Disney's Beauty and the Beast National Tour.
In constant demand as a session musician, Mr. Swarts has recorded for the film and video game industry at George Lucas' Skywalker Sound. Among his film credits are Predator 2, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Jurassic Park III, and Zodiac. Video Game credits include The Simpsons, Disneyland Kinect, G. I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and the horn solo in Starcraft II.
Glen's public life is reflected in his complete dedication to the music and giving it beauty, depth and meaning in performance. Glen enjoys a simple life at home in San Francisco where he lives with his college girlfriend, Carolyn and in taking long walks with their Maltese, Ollie.
