The Paradise Theatre School: THE BANKS OF THE MARIANNE
The Paradise Theatre School presents THE BANKS OF THE MARIANNE A new play by Pattie Miles Van Beuzekom Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays. February 28 March 22
For people who'd rather kiss than watch television, THE BANKS OF THE MARIANNE is a multi media, surreal murder mystery that gives new meaning to the phrase "kill your television." The lines between truth and illusion are blurred and each audience member leaves with a different verdict.
Aubrey Ennaway is on his way to Hollywood to become an action adventure television star. Rosealee Blanche McGrew is on her way home after spending 17 years in prison for killing her mother. The 48 hours they spend together in a bus station sets off a succession of events, real and imagined, that may prove Rose's innocence and make the television ratings soar.
Playwright Pattie Miles Van Beuzekom states, "Before I started writing in May of 2006, I knew Rose and Robbie would meet in a bus station and that his relationship with Roses sister would come between them. I also wanted to have three generations of American women represented and created Valarie, age 17, and Aunt, age 62.
Without forcing a particular theme on the play early on, I knew I wanted to say something about working class Americans struggling to make ends meet and how so many American communities define who there are by what they watch on television.
I also wanted to write a juicy murder scene, experiment with different kinds of love romantic, perverse, cruel, abusive, and nave. I write plays on a kind of instinct and I wanted to allow my practical and creative sides to form and merge two different worlds, real and imagined, small town and Hollywood.
If I had to define the dramatic action of the play, I would say it was Robbie and Rose trying to get back to the bus station literally and figuratively."
The cast includes Charles Duncan, Torrey Berkson, Scott Nollette, Erik Van Beuzekom, Michelle Stay, Michelle Hensel, Lawrason Driscoll, Nancy Muir, Consuelo Aduviso, Catherine McNabb, Camille Hildebrandt, Pattie Miles Van Beuzekom, and Ben Rezendes.
