Poetry and the Spirit: A Workshop for Readers and Writers
Poetry and the Spirit: A Workshop for Readers and Writers
Saturday, October 6, 1:30-4:00 p.m. St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 910 E. 3rd Ave. in Durango Instructor: Beth Paulson Fee for class: $35
"Attentiveness is the natural prayer of the human soul," wrote Paul Celan. Mary Oliver asks, "what is it you plan to do/with your one wild and precious life?"
Reading and writing poetry can be a way to experience the Spirit in our lives and one of the ways we practice spirituality.
In this workshop we will look at selected writings by a few contemporary poets whose work exemplifies poetry as prayer, including Wendell Berry, Mary Oliver, and Jane Hirshfield. Additionally, we will discuss reading, writing and using poetry as daily meditation, and we will practice together a few approaches to both widen the scope and deepen the practice of spiritual writing.
Participants will receive packets of poems and lists of suggested meditative writing prompts, activities, and names of journals which publish spiritual writing.
