Dr. Itzik Gottesman: What's Jewish (And Yiddish) About the Evil Eye?
The belief in the evil eye - the idea that someone's envious look can damage and even kill - is ancient and cross-cultural. But the Jewish adaptation of this belief has its own specific characteristics. This talk will emphasize the belief as it existed among the Yiddish speaking Jews of Eastern Europe: how it was detected, how it was avoided, and what was said in Yiddish to protect oneself and get rid of it.
