ASCE Seattle Section Ports and Harbors Committee Monthly Dinner
Precast/prestressed concrete is the preferred material in many marine applications, providing an economical solution with inherent long-term durability. Concrete Technology Corporation has been an active participant in this market for over six decades, providing products for fixed piers, floating structures, marina floats, and miscellaneous marine applications. This presentation will provide highlights of precast concrete products, materials, and methods including: Profiles of various fixed and floating structure projects and product types used.
Discussion of the typical concrete and reinforcing materials used in marine applications, as well as discussion of less typical materials to consider in special applications (i.e., self-consolidating and modified-density concretes, or supplemental cementitious materials). Illustration of the production cycle of a product moving through the manufacturing process, the tooling and equipment required for prestressing, and the impact the daily production cycle has on materials and methods. Practical guidelines for owner requirements for special material testing, such as alkali-silica reactivity and rapid-chloride permeability testing.
Speakers:
Jim Parkins is a sales manager at Concrete Technology Corporation (CTC). He has been a project manager and estimator at CTC for over 12 years working on a variety of precast structure projects, including bridges, building parking structures, fixed piers, and floats. The majority of his career has been as an estimator for marine and heavy construction projects, providing support to designers during project development, estimating, and contracting. He has recently been involved with Pier 23 (Tacoma), Washington United (Tacoma), Pier B (Bremerton) and the Carl E. Moses floating breakwater (Unalaska, AK). Jim has a BS in civil engineering from Gonzaga University, a M.B.A from City University of Seattle, and is a registered engineer in the state of Washington.
