RCRG Presents: The Well Balanced Rollergirl
"It's not if you get hurt, but when..." is a phrase all rollergirls know. Traumatic injuries occur frequently with roller derby, but if you experience pain with non-contact aspects of the sport, your mechanics may be to blame. This five-part class will help you better understand your anatomy and mechanics, teach you corrective exercises, and prevent overuse syndromes that commonly occur with skating. The core, hip/pelvis, knee, foot, and balance/cross training concepts will all be addressed to make you a more balanced, pain-free athlete.
Sessions:
Sun 11/18 2-4 p.m.: Introductory concepts and the core Sat 12/8 2-4 p.m.: The well-balanced hip and pelvis Sun 12/9 2-4 p.m.: The well-balanced knee Sat 12/15 2-4 p.m.: The well-balanced foot and ankle Sun 12/16 2-4 p.m.: The well-balanced rollergirl
Each session with consist of lecture, interactive labs, and open discussions.
28 max attendess will be allowed per session.

Sessions will be taught by Jill McVey, Physical Therapist, published author, lecturer, and teacher on "Foundations in Movement System Balance" for fitness industry professionals, and new roller derby athlete.
Program Outline:
Session 1: Introductory concepts and the core
After taking this class, the participant will be able to: 1.Articulate the soft tissues that primarily constitute the lumbopelvic core 2.Verbalize and demonstrate correct recruitment of the core based on task demands 3.Perform at least one corrective exercise for the inner and outer core while correctly monitoring their mechanics.
Session 2: The well-balanced hip and pelvis
After taking this class, the participant will be able to: 1.Articulate why knee pain is driven from the hip 2.Name the basic muscle groups involved in hip (and thusly knee) control 3.Differentiate between a "tight" and a "short" muscle, thereby better guiding a stretching routine as well as prevent hip syndromes 4.Articulate how SI and local hip pain occur via faulty mechanics
Session 3: The well-balanced knee
After taking this class, the participant will be able to: 1.Name specific knee structures that are often injured as a result of poor skating mechanics 2.Appropriately assess knee alignment as part of posture or movement, and identify key impairments which may contribute to pain/dysfunction/injury 3.Demonstrate correct self-assessment of double and single limb squat mechanics as a method to decrease risk of non-contact skating injuries
Session 4: The well-balanced foot and ankle
After taking this class, the participant will be able to: 1.Identify key regions of the foot and ankle to enable good stability and function while skating 2.Articulate how the foot and ankle can contribute to knee/hip pain and dysfunction 3.Demonstrate corrective exercises to strengthen the foot and prevent toe deformity 4.Assess over the counter inserts relative to their foot type
Session 5: The well-balanced rollergirl
After taking this class, the participant will be able to: 1.Identify correct alignment and muscle strategies with one-legged balance 2.Articulate appropriate cross-training strategies for roller derby 3.Articulate key mechanics and goals for plyometric training 4.Improve performance and recovery by articulating appropriate current nutrition and hydration principles
