Bat Makumba and Lions of Batacuda
The brainchild of Brazilian natives Alex Koberle and Emiliano Benevides and Americano bassist Carl Remde, Bat Makumba is the crossroads between the traditional music of their equatorial homeland and the punk, rock and funk influences of the US and UK. Locals to San Francisco, Bat Makumba's show is a hip renegade carnaval party full of tropicalia tinged ska, punk influenced forro, and rock infused samba.
The Lions of Batucada are a Portland, Oregon based, Brazilian-styled marching samba ensemble, playing music inspired by the Escolas de Samba in Rio de Janeiro and the Blocos in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Utilizing traditional instruments such as repinique, surdo, caixa, tamborim, chocalo, cuica, pandeiro, agogo, timbal, reco-reco, caixeta, pratos, triangulo, along with occasional vocals, the Lions perform intricate rhythms and melodies that are exciting to hear, and exciting to watch. The Lions feature costumed and choreographed samba dancers, providing for an exhilarating experience that brings the excitement and happiness of Carnaval to any event.
