Ensemble Leonarda w/ Kelly "Killy Mockstar" Dwyer
Join baroque band ENSEMBLE LEONARDA (Susan Graham, flute; Claire Smith Bermingham, violin; Sarah Stone, gamba & cello; Nancy Kito, harpsichord) as they explore music by composers who sought out brave new worlds: Handel (in England), Hotteterre (who went to Rome), & French baroque opera founder, Jean-Baptiste Lully (who emigrated from Florence, Italy to the French court of Louis XIV). Plus a very special rendition of Dvoák's "Largo" from his "New World" Symphony, featuring performance artist Kelly Dwyer ("Killy Mockstar").
A small reception to follow.
This concert part of the New York Philharmonic New World Initiative Project.
------------- ENSEMBLE LEONARDA was formed at the Peabody Conservatory of Music, where its founding members were participating in the early music program. Named after the composer Isabella Leonarda (16201704), this group of gifted individuals came together to form an ensemble dedicated to performing works of the Baroque masters with vim, vigor, and enthusiasm. Past performances have included recitals at the Church of the Epiphany as part of the Washington Musicians for Nuclear Disarmament series; Squires Recital Salon at Virginia Tech; St. Peters Lutheran Church, St. Pauls ChapelColumbia University, the Donnell Library Center, Music in Chelsea, Church of the Transfiguration, Arteks Midtown Concert Series, and the Boston Early Music Festival Fringe Concert Series.
Killer Killy Dwyer is a mockstar comedic performance artist and musician. Her catchy and completely unexpected one-of-a-kind act can best be described as dark comedy punk cabaret using vocal looping, a whole host of instruments, mistakes and improvisation, audience participation, found sound, toys and apps. Killy is like Reggie Watts meets Bridget Everette meets Andy Kaufman. Often, Killy mixes multi media video work, puppetry, dance and performance art into her electric, edgy shows. Killy is a 2 time Andy Kaufman Award Finalist, was named One of Five Female, Brooklyn Artists You Should Know by Brooklyn Exposed, was nominated by Planet Connections for Best Band/Musician and has received Frigid Fests coveted Audience Choice awards for her sharp, satirical comedy musicals Mock Bottom, Hyster-Killy, KILL THE BAND and My Box. Her music has been featured on Dr. Demento, Sirius XMs and on NPR's American Parlor Songbook. Killy co-produced the NY Funny Songs fest the last few years, both giving and getting opportunities to showcase comedy music in a fun, festival atmosphere. She tours her act world wide and has her own public access show Alter Ego airing on NYCs MNN.
