Masonboro Sound
Masonboro Sound is an acoustic band from Wilmington, North Carolina. The band's name comes from the water body behind Masonboro Island. Band members Jim Durham and Matt Thuman worked together and began some music pickin' sessions along with some other workmates around 2001. Jim has a background in bluegrass and country, playing in bands during college days in Missouri. Matt played guitar growing up in New York, but learned some mandolin to round out the jam band. Doug Wall joined in 2008 on upright bass (since he had one), bringing another harmony. Doug also has experience in bluegrass bands since college, playing guitar and singing with local Wilmington band the Hewletts Creek Boys. Together this trio has developed a unique style, weaving tight harmonies and interesting arrangements of bluegrass, rock and folk songs. Perry Hewlett, an accomplished Wilmington musician, joins the band when available on banjo and dobro bringing excellence to instrument solos.
