Fog Beast is a live art collective initiated and driven by Melecio Estrella and Andrew Ward. Our mission is to research, create, and perform accessible dance based art works that demand spontaneity, connectivity, and engagement with the immediate surroundings and local community. Move Here is the company's first evening length work.
From the Artists: We have been fortunate to be in artistic residency at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center this year. In our explorations we have been talking to the walls and humans of the space, dancing with doorways, singing songs to the floor, and contemplating the ripples that a 54 year old dance school has sent out into the world.
We see Shawl-Anderson as a living example of a place for dance that gives way to a sense of community. It is a place for different bodies and styles to coexist and cross pollinate. It is welcoming and humble in its appearance while being rigorous and in depth in its dancing.
Move Here will take place in multiple spaces throughout the dance center. We have assembled a brilliant cast of creatives to breathe life into our show...
Ben Juodvalkis (Musician, Composer) Diana Strong (Musician, Composer Damara Ganley (Choreography, Performance) Caroline Alexander (Choreography, Performance) Jono Brandel (Media, Visuals) Melecio Estrella (Choreography, Direction, Performance) Andrew Ward (Choreography, Direction, Performance) Shawl-Anderson Youth Ensemble (Guest Performers)
You can expect the unexpected... While honoring the many lineages of modern dance that we come from, we do not adhere to traditional forms. We forge our own connections, make our own rules and break them if we need to. We mash up disorientation with the immediacy of place and body toward a dynamic aesthetic of human peculiarity.
We are interested in bringing concert dance to a folk level, like craft beer and local food movements, we are crafting local dance to be savored on a small scale.
The Fog Beast debut Move Here was featured in the fall arts preview in the East Bay Express...http://www.eastbayexpress.com/ebx/keeping-time/Content?oid=3324464
Melecio Estrella is a bay area born and raised dance artist. He has enjoyed working with the Joe Goode Performance Group since 2004. Melecio currently performs and teaches aerial dance with Project Bandaloop. He is thankful to have worked with Scott Wells, Rachael Lincoln, Lizz Roman, Frieda Kipar, Jesse Hewit and others over the years. Lately he has been choreographing original works alone and with Fog Beast, a project that he co-directs with Andrew Ward. Melecio believes in the power of live art to support and connect individuals and communities.
Andrew Ward has been dancing with Joe Goode Performance Group for four years. He is a graduate of UC Berkeley with a degree in Peace and Conflict Studies. In his youth, Andrew left the world of competitive gymnastics to find joy and satisfaction in the modern dance program at Berkeley High School. Along with dancing, he now teaches and choreographs in the greater Bay Area.
