Armchair Tour of the Louvre--DVD Course
The Louvre Museum in Paris is one of the world's largest museums and a fascinating historical monument. Its paintings and statuary have been a source of inspiration for generations of American artists, from Benjamin West to Edward Hopper.. It attracts around 9 million visitors a year, about 10 percent of them Americans. Because of the vastness of its holdings, a visit in person can be overwhelming.
In this DVD course, you will be led by an eminent art historian and curator on an introductory tour which covers the evolution of the museum and its collections over many centuries. His expertise and enthusiasm will provide an insightful overview of the museum's treasures, with emphasis on paintings from the Renaissance up to the middle of the 19th century and covering the art of various countries, time periods and artistic schools.
There will be six sessions. Each session will consist of two half-hour illustrated DVD lectures, supplemental information and comments by Felicia Brown, and plenty of time for discussion led by Judy Yager. You will come away with an appreciation of the amazing treasures in the Louvre and its influence on American art, and a desire to explore it personally and at greater depth.
Felicia Brown spent a third of her working years teach French language and literature and the rest running the Probate Court investigations unit of the Superior Court on Santa Clara Country. At retirement, she breathed a sigh of relief and plunged into her first love: the impractical field of art appreciation. She facilitated a course in 2011 for OLLI on the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Judy Yager taught psychology at Butte College and then used that background in various trainer and management positions in state government. She has had a lifelong interest in art, and has visited many of the world's great art museums, including the Louvre. Judy will bring her experience and ability as a group facilitator to support discussion about this fascinating subject.
This course is scheduled on Oct. 26, Nov 2, 9, 16, 30, & Dec. 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. The classes will be held at PG&E in SLO except for Nov. 2 and 9 when they will be held at KCBX, also in SLO.
