The People's Kitchen celebrates 10 years of People's Grocery
The People's Kitchen (PK) is a free, monthly, pop-up, community restaurant that couples political education and movement building with a high-end, local, organic meal that is lovingly prepared by community chefs. Each monthly PK will raise donations for different local grassroots radical political projects and program as well as highlight and celebrate the foods of different cultures and communities in Oakland. We use food and recipes as a tool for storytelling and reclaiming community knowledge. We believe that sharing food and building community knowledge are key to the process of decolonization.
During September, People's Kitchen has selected People's Grocery as their fundraising recipient for the evening - join us for dinner, and learn about the stories that inspire People's Grocery, from the history of California Hotel to the stories that drive the Growing Justice Institute Fellows. We will be designing a multi-course family style meal to celebrate the history of People's Grocery and the stories of the local food justice movement. All proceeds from September's People's Kitchen will benefit People's Grocery.
The harvest, cooking and meal will all be shared collectively and be infused with dialogues and political education focused on building community and movement towards decolonizing our diets and deconstructing the neocolonial food system. This dinner marks our first People's Kitchen in our new permanent location at Cosecha in Swan's Marketplace in old-town Oakland. The People's Kitchen will be the last Saturday of every month at 6pm at Cosecha on 907 Washington Street in Oakland.
On Septemeber 29th, The PK benefit for People's Grocery will feature collective storytelling, a wonderful (and rare!) performance from Nikki Henderson, Executive Director of People's Grocery, local musicians, DJs and visual artists. There will be community resources to get more involved in the local food movement as well as an ability to pick up some inexpensive plant starts from the PG greenhouse for your fall planting!
We look forward to seeing you there and sharing a meal!
