To ask for a map is to say tell me a story. Maps, like writing, are acts of exploration and presentation. In this creative mapping workshop, working from memory, we will choose a familiar neighborhood of St Petersburg and entertain the following questions to experience a different visualization of space and a different relationship to "the familiar". Then we will examine a number of unique maps to learn how to make a physical rendering of these new discoveries and tell our visual story. What are the purposes or elements of a map? What does an alternative map or a counter map look like? How do we give categories a radical new flexibility? Migratory routes? Disaster? Rights and conflicts? Can we map the invisible? What is invisible? Emotions? Hidden connections? Things done in your absence? Buried things? Speed of movement? Passage of time? Dream spaces? What worlds are we creating in the discovery?
