ABOUT BERT: Bert Roughton Jr. is managing editor and senior editorial director of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Roughton is responsible for the journalistic content of the newspaper and premium website with a special focus on investigative and enterprise reporting.
Under his leadership, the AJC has produced much award-winning journalism, including the newspapers groundbreaking investigations into sex abuse against patients by doctors, police shootings in Georgia and test cheating in Atlanta Public Schools.
Roughton also is leading the newsrooms evolution through the rapidly changing media landscape, and last year produced the first-ever, five-year plan to fully align editors and reporters to the digital future. Among his recent innovations is the newspapers first long-form podcast, Breakdown, which detailed the multiple failures of the justice system that landed a man in prison without a fair trial. The podcast has been downloaded nearly 5 million times by a worldwide audience.
Roughton joined the Journal-Constitution in 1981. Before becoming an editor, he had a distinguished career as a reporter. His coverage of Atlantas bid and subsequent staging of the 1996 Olympics received several awards. As European correspondent for Cox Newspapers, Roughton was recognized for his work covering the war in Kosovo and won a national Headliner award for his 2000 series detailing the plight of African children orphaned by the AIDs epidemic.
Roughton led the newspapers coverage of the Sept. 11 attacks and its aftermath as well as its 2005 Pulitzer Prize finalist coverage of the Fulton County Courthouse shooting, which won a national Headliner award for breaking news.
Roughton was educated at Georgia Southern University, the American University of Beirut and Georgia State University. He lives in Atlanta and on St. Simons Island, Ga., with his wife, Melinda. Their two grown sons live in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Asheville, N.C.
