Pentacle Presents: The Gallery: Boston
Pentacle, the artist services agency based in New York City, returns for the third year with a program of performances by its Gallery artists including Dorcas Roman Dance Theatre from Los Angeles, The Moving Architects - formerly from Chicago now in the metropolitan New York area, Danse4Nia Repertory Ensemble from Philadelphia, and Janis Brenner & Dancers, and Body Stories: Teresa Fellion Dance, all based in New York City.
Activities will include the performances and an artist symposium at 3:00 pm Saturday afternoon (free) hosted by Peter DiMuro, Executive Director of The Dance Complex. Join us before the performance for an informal showing of work! The 2017 Dance Complex aMaSSiT Artists will present their works in progress in the lobby space one hour before each show.
About the Artists
BodyStories: Teresa Fellion Dance is a contemporary dance company that captures and communicates universal human encounters through dynamic, purposeful movement. They are a multifaceted, highly physical company laced with provocative, emotional, political and humorous edges. The work is intellectual and highly choreographed in every moment. It is intricately technical and controlled in every nuance, with a look that is not controlled. Live music is an important factor in many of their productions and they consistently work via in-depth collaborations in lighting, costume, video and set design. In addition to creating and performing innovative works, the company is committed to reaching diverse populations through outreach and education and maintaining a stable business model to sustain their work. Valuing international exchange, collectively company members speak nine languages and research, perform, and collaborate with artists from five continents. The company has had a presence in Boston for the last number of years and is pleased to return to The Dance Gallery with other Pentacle Gallery artists.
Danse4Nia Repertory Ensemble is a Philadelphia-based, multicultural, contemporary modern dance company founded in 2006. In the Kiswahili language, the word nia means purpose. As an ensemble, we dance with a purpose to inspire ourselves and others toward positive personal, social and cultural change. The company's mission is to educate, empower, and create the next generation of well-rounded arts advocates and citizens by presenting exceptional dance works, collaborating with artists across genres, and delivering high-impact residencies. Danse4Nia has gained a reputation for being a sound, self-producing organization with annual performances in New York City and Philadelphia. They have participated in Dance In Public Places to help further advocate for and foster awareness of the state of concert dance in Philadelphia and can be found showcasing actively in our community. Its initial performance included collaborations with New York based spoken word artist Mo Beasley and International Turntablist DJ Razor Ramon; since then DANSE4NIA has showcased works from established choreographers Faye Snow, Shawn-Lamere Williams, Meridth Rainey, Abdul Salaam as wellas artistic director Coward-Gilmore.
Dorcas Román Dance Theatre (DRDT) employs and incorporates contact improvisation, release, dance-theatre, Latin jazz, Flamenco and West African dance as well as Horton Technique in their work. A dancer and choreographer native of Puerto Rico, Dorcas Román has been active in dance and theatre for more than 23 years. DRDT explores social, racial and gender issues through dance and theatre, and is committed to making the arts accessible to all communities to raise social awareness. The company continues to teach and perform throughout the United States, especially in Southern California. Previous tours include appearances in Spain, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Chicago, New York, Texas, Vermont and California. The company has participated in festivals such as CoolNY, Going Dutch, New Wave Rising, Dance Gallery Festival, MixMatch Dance Festival, White Wave, Southern Vermont Dance Festival and The Chicago Harvest Contemporary Festival. In recent years, DRDT has participated in the Los Angeles dance series at Highways Performance Space, Studio A and the BlackTina Dance Festival in California, while Artistic Director Román has presented and created work in Spain, Puerto Rico and Brazil and been nominated for an Ovation award in Los Angeles. Román has taught in higher education for more than fifteen years including California State University, Long Beach; Cypress College; Cerritos College; Marymount College; and El Camino College. Her international experiences and cultural heritage infuse not only her performances and choreography, but her approaches to teaching as well. She joined the Shenandoah University conservatory as a Full time Visiting Professor of Dance in Fall 2016. She has also served as part of the American Delegation for the Internationale Tanzmesse Festival for Contemporary Dance in Düsseldorf, Germany in 2014, and was invited to join the Latina Dance Theater Project by teaching and presenting work in collaboration with Projecto EluzArtes in Vitória, Brazil, in spring 2015. Román served as faculty, dancer and choreographer at the Southern Vermont Dance Festival over the last two summers. She also participated in an artist residency in Greece this past fall in a project called Islanders among Waters. Román received her Bachelor of Arts in theatre at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and her Master of Fine Arts in choreography and performance from the University of California, Los Angeles. She is also certified in Hatha Yoga, Shakti Naam, Naam Yoga and Prenatal Yoga.
Erin Carlisle Norton founded The Moving Architects on New Years Day, 2007. Growing up outside Pittsburgh, PA she developed a heightened awareness of her experience of physical spaces long-steeped in the passage of time. As an artist she seeks to channel research of places, structures, their histories, and associated cultural transformations into choreography, exploring the embodiment of past and distant spaces in the heightened present of live performance. In March 2011, the company completed a tour of Central Asia sponsored by The U.S. Department of State and U.S. Embassies, and in 2012 the company had a residency as part of Tercer Festival Internacional de Danze Antigua, Guatemala City. Additionally Norton was invited to teach and perform throughout Morocco with Association DFleurs Action 5 Dans Festival with sponsorship by the U.S. Embassy. In the NYC area, TMA has performed at Ailey Citigroup Theater, Dixon Place, Movement Research Open Performance, Green Space, Triskelion Arts, Chez Bushwick, Peridance, Gibney Dance, DNA, South Orange Performing Arts Center (NJ), and DeBaum Auditorium (NJ). Nationally TMA has performed at The Other Dance Festival (Chicago), Hyde Park Art Center (Chicago), Links Hall (Chicago), Wellspring Dance Forum (MI), World Dance Alliance Festival (WI), and Columbus Dances (OH), and in last year's Pentacle show at The Dance Complex. Norton received the prestigious 2014 New Jersey State Council on the Arts Choreographic Fellowship and frequently teaches master classes in academic and community settings across the country. In June 2015, TMA launched Movers & Shapers: A Dance Podcast, a dance interview podcast led by Norton that features the choreographers, dancers, educators, media artists, administrators, collaborators, and other shapers of the dance field.
Janis Brenner & Dancers is an acclaimed NY company known for its meticulous artistry (Deborah Jowitt, The Village Voice). They have performed throughout the U.S., Asia, Southeast Asia, and Europe for more than twenty years and been presented by leading NY organizations and festivals including Danspace Project, Dance Theater Workshop, The Whitney Museum of American Art, Madison Square Garden Theater, Symphony Space, Joyce SoHo, The 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Festival, DanceNow, Battery Park Dance Festival, Dance In the Square, Fiorello Festival, and the screening of the Dancing In Absentia video at The Joyce Theater. The company has appeared at many festivals including ones in Russia, Taiwan, Korea, Indonesia, France, Switzerland, Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival, the American Dance Festival, New Moves Festival, Huntington Arts Festival, and many others. JB&D is known for its wide range of residency activities in dance technique, composition, improvisation, repertory, Yoga, and personal fitness training and is hailed for the caliber of its dancers and its emotionally authentic and musically diverse work. Ms. Brenners works range from the virtuosic and musical heartSTRINGS, to the solo tour-de-force Solo For Janis by Richard Siegal, to her characteristically intense and emotionally authentic dances such as Lost, Found, Lost and A Peace For Women, to her vocal/movement collaborations with Meredith Monk, her multidisciplinary, intergenerational The Memory Project, and the profoundly moving (Eva Yaa Asantewaa, Infinite Body) movement/improv/text The Mind-Stuff Variations. The companys NY concert seasons have been major, critically acclaimed events in the dance community, encompassing work from Ms. Brenners choreographic journey as well as works of major creative forces and mentors such as Murray Louis, Meredith Monk, Annabelle Gamson, Mary Wigman and collaborators Mitchell Bogard, Richard Siegal, Theo Bleckmann and Michael Moschen.
