Jazz @ The Gasworks Presents: Winter Series 2017 Season Tickets
4 incredible jazz shows at The Gasworks for 1 price!

JANUARY 26: Vito Rezza & 5 AFTER 4

Vito Rezza (dr)
Matt Horner (keyboard)
Pat Kilbride (bass)
John Johnson (sax)

The Toronto-based Rezza is known as a drummer's drummer, the kind of player who awes his peers. Vinnie Colaiuta declared "Vito is the worlds best kept secret, killin!", while Chick Corea told Vito "I heard your CD. Amazing. What planet are you from and would you be interested in playing with the Electric Band?" The fact that Rezza was featured on the cover of the November 2011 issue of musicians' bible Downbeat further confirms this well deserved reputation.

There is far more to Vito Rezza than superb stickhandling skills, however. He is also a bandleader and composer with a string of highly acclaimed albums under his belt. For the past 22 years, Rezza has led Canadian ensemble 5 After 4, and the band has opened for the likes of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Spyro Gyra, Kevin Eubanks, Boss Brass, and Joe Henderson. 5 After 4 released their sixth record, Rome In A Day, last year, on the ALMA Records label. The eleven-track disc featured six Rezza original compositions, and it confirmed hes at the peak of his powers in all his different roles.

MARCH 2: The Dave Young Quartet Plays Ellington

Dave Young (bass)
Kevin Turcotte (trumpet)
Terry Clarke (drums)
Robi Botos (piano)

Toronto based and Winnipeg born multiple award winning bassist and composer Dave Young, is, without a doubt, one of Canada's most valuable and beloved musical exports. Whether he's performing as part of a classical symphony, or as an integral member of an iconic jazz trio (with the likes of the late Oscar Peterson), or leading any of his dynamic ensembles, Dave remains a total musician, with artistic soul in abundance.

To my way of thinking, Dave Young is one of the most talented bassists on the jazz scene. His harmonic sympatico and unerring sense of time have kept him in the foreground of the jazz picture.  Dr. Oscar Peterson

For this celebration of the music of Duke Ellington Dave has assembled five of the finest musicians playing on world stages today   stellar musicians performing timeless music.

MARCH 30: Denzal Sinclaire & Friends

Denzal Sinclaire (vocals)
Pat Collins (bass)
Joel Haynes (bass)
Nick Tateishi (guitar)

Toronto-born vocalist/pianist/composer, Denzal Sinclaire has earned his reputation as Canadas most popular male jazz vocalist.

Denzal's vocal timbre is similar to some of the great singers. Nat King Cole, Johnny Hartman and there are even glimpses of Johnny Mathis jazz days. However, Denzal does have what every artist strives for. After singing just a few notes you know it is him. His trademark is the joyfulness in his voice and a special approach to phrasing a lyric or pushing or laying back on a beat. He is blessed with exquisite delivery, sensitivity to melody and a lyrical imagination. For Denzal, singing is as natural as breathing.

A multiple Juno Award nominee, and recipient of the 2004 National Jazz Award for Best Album, he has graced the stages of numerous high-profile jazz festivals, performed with symphony orchestras, and starred in his own one hour television special for BRAVO! In 2005, Denzal was inducted into the British Columbia Entertainment Hall of
Fame.

Among Denzals admirers are Diana Krall, who was introduced to Denzal at the 1995 Jazz Winnipeg Festival and Diane Reeves, who became a fan after Denzal opened for her at the 2002 Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

APRIL 27: Darcy Hepner Jazz Orchestra  A Tribute to ELLA Fitzgerald / In celebration of her 100th birthday

Featuring Sophia Perlman on vocals

Formed in January 2008 the DHJO has established itself as one of the premier jazz orchestras in Canada featuring stellar players who individually have performed with music legends such as Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Diana Krall, Tito Puente, The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, The Woody Herman Orchestra , The Count Basie Orchestra, Manhattan Transfer and many others.

What started out as a three-week-long Big Band engagement in Hamiltons downtown Corktown Pub in 2008, turned into one of the years most interesting phenomena, (Hamilton Magazine 2008) creating a buzz well outside Hamiltons borders. Since its inception the Darcy Hepner Jazz Orchestra has performed over 100 shows in the GTA.
