Portland Society of Architects Short Film Night
The Portland Society of Architects and SPACE Gallery present an evening of short films which look at design, architecture and urban development. The seven films presented include the following:
Concrete Coast (26 min.), by Robert Harding Pittman, is about the social, cultural and environmental effects of the last bit of un-urbanized Spanish Mediterranean coast being built up for residential tourism in the Region of Murcia. Passive Passion (21 min.), by Charlie Hoxie, looks at the Passive House design method an approach that combines heavy insulation, air-tightness, and heat-recovery ventilation to achieve reductions of up to 90% in the energy required for heating and cooling. The High Line (Phase 2) (6 min.), by Ian Harris and David Krantz, was produced for Architect Magazine, and covers the famed elevated park in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood. Into the Garden of Glass and Steel (14 min.), by Aristotelis Maragkos, explores Canary Wharf, the economical centre of London, through the science fiction texts of J.G. Ballard. The Landfill (3 min.), by Jessica Edwards & Gary Hustwit, demonstrates how trash becomes energy at a small New York landfill where people are thinking differently about garbage. Mudgee Tower (3 min.), by Naomi Bishops and Richard Raber, looks at the inspiration, design and construction of this unique and totally sustainable shelter. Public Farm 1 (18 min.), by Lilibet Foster, portrays WORK Architecture Company and their project creating an urban farm and public space at P.S.1's outdoor courtyard in Queens, New York.
The screenings will have an intermission and discussion periods in the middle and at the end of the program, as moderated by the Portland Society of Architects.
