SOUNDS OF SOKOLOW PART III: LYRIC SUITE
The Sokolow Theatre Dance Ensemble return this season in the newly renovated theater of the 14th Street Y in NYC to present the last part of Sounds of Sokolow's "LYRIC SUITE", music of Alban Berg. Join us December 3-9, 2012 for a week of classes, performances and more events.
Lyric Suite premiered in Mexico City in 1953 and presented in New York City the following year. Louis Horst in Dance Observer wrote, "It is one of the finest examples of lyric theater dance. It speaks in abstract and stark simplicity, translating the qualitative moods of the music into penetrating and evocative movement designs. Superbly choreographed and thoroughly integrated with the music, its lyric beauty has a direct appeal to kinesthetic response. Thirty minutes in length, it draws on Ms. Sokolow's twenty years of solo dancing. Ms. Sokolow regarded Lyric Suite as an artistic turning point in which she found a language of movement all her own, one which allowed her to express her deepest feelings as an artist.
Additionally on the program a special live performance of "Evolution of Ragtime" (Sokolow & Jelly-Roll Morton), and "Empty Nest", a duet choreographed by Jim May in 1989.
